Beginnings

SunriseWell, it’s been quite awhile since my last blog. The excitement of learning new technologies in my Master’s course and keeping up on other blogs just kept getting in the wayof contributing to my own. However, with the new school year beginning, I am hoping to take a little time at the beginning or end of each day to add to this site. I am also hoping to add my class page to this blog and get them contributing.

What I’m thinking of is making each day a theme day. In the next few days, I will think about what each day should focus on. Most likely there will be a photo day, , a poem day, an educational link day and a reflection day. As I said though, this may change.

But back to the title.

This is a new year for me. Previous to this year, I had taught in the same school for several years and had become very comfortable. Having my situation change last year and moving to a new province, I have been encouraged to grow as a teacher and try something different. It was a difficult transition for me as I deeply loved the school I had spent so many years working in developing programs, contributing and helping to make the school a learning environment my students enjoyed coming to each day.

Working in one school for a number of years, you grow roots and invest a lot of yourself in that school and in the relationships with other teachers. This year will be a dramatic change for me. I feel very much like a new teacher. I walk in the first day and teachers are welcoming each other, laughing, sharing stories of their summer. Meanwhile, I am quiet and feeling my way around, careful not to step on toes.

So, this will be my year to break out and re-discover myself as an educator and make new friendships. Despite all the work dealing with new curriculum, programs and expectations, I am excited about entering a new chapter in my career. There will be challenges, mistakes and regrets, but it will be a new experience. That is how I am entering this new phase.

How do you deal with moving to new schools? It’s a big change. How do you prepare?
